In these times, it often seems we haven’t the right to work in our own country. Industries are continuing to freely move production overseas, sometimes just across the border, where labor is cheaper and workers have even fewer rights. In the United States, unemployment continues to increase and workers are clutching onto whatever work they can find in order to stay afloat. However, sinking seems inevitable…

Bag Lunches with Workers Rights Pamphlets Ready To Be Delivered!

Temporary labor agencies witness an increase in people looking for work, as well as an increase in contracts with companies trying to keep labor costs from cutting into their profits. Temporary labor agencies allow companies to employ both skilled and unskilled workers, without having to honor worker safety, pay raises, health care and other benefits that tend to come with a more permanent workforce.

The Richmond Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) is a labor union utilizing the strategy of ‘solidarity unionism’ in order to organize across all industries, while advocating for workers rights. We wish to ensure that these workers are aware of their rights, and have access to the resources and a community which can assist in claiming those rights, whether through legal means or direct action. We want to support working people by holding management in their respective industries accountable while organizing to change the standards within that industry.

The Richmond chapter of the Industrial Workers of the World is beginning an initiative to provide wholesome lunches and information about workers’ rights to temporary workers and day laborers. Our bagged lunch program will serve meals at least once a week, in the wee hours of the morning, before shifts begin. We want you and your organization to stand up against inequality and hunger and join us in supporting working class people and their access to knowledge and information about their rights.

Please join the Richmond Industrial Workers of the World initiative to support the rights of workers to fair and safe working conditions. There are a number of ways you can get involved:

• cooking and baking with us on Sunday evenings at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond 1000 Blanton Avenue 8pm – 11pm
• purchasing supplies, paper bags, aluminum foil and food containers
• donating bulk dry goods and non-perishable items (ie. rice, beans, dried fruits)
• assisting with early morning delivery of lunches (between 6:30am & 7:30am)
• translating literature from English to Spanish

“There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of the working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life.” – Industrial Workers of the World
